2014 Snakebite Seminar Overview

The Ninth Bio-Ken International Snakebite Seminar will take place in Watamu next weekend.

It all kicks off on the evening of Thursday 23rd October 2014 with an informal gathering at Hemingways Resort where delegates, speakers and guests can get together in a relaxed atmosphere and mingle. This will be from 6.30pm onwards with a cash bar.

Day 1, Friday 24th October, Turtle Bay Beach Club, registration at 8:00am for start at 9:00am sharp. This day will be on snakes in general and cover natural history, identification, history of East African herpetology, reptile conservation and other topics from a coastal residents perspective. The speakers are all reptile experts in their areas and will be able to take questions on varying topics within the field of herpetology. If you want to know anything about snakes in Kenya then this will be the place to be. It will be a full day with a subsidised lunch provided by TBBC.

For anyone interested, Ocean Sports (Chef Florian Biziere) will be putting on a special Snakebite Seminar Supper from 7.30pm on a cash basis. More details will be given on the day.

Day 2, Saturday 25th October, Turtle Bay Beach Club, registration at 8:00am for start at 9:00am sharp. The day will cover the correct and up to date treatment of venomous snakebite in Africa. We will concentrate on the problems of snakebite management in remote areas and the complications faced by poor or rural communities that are the most affected. We will attempt to highlight the problems relating to a shortage of good quality, affordable antivenom in Africa, with suggestions and recommendations on how to move forward.

With speakers from Australia, UK and South Africa as well as local professionals on snakebite to give an ‘on the ground’ perspective, the day promises to be a full on snakebite day with some of the most recognised snakebite experts in the world. Case studies will be presented showing practical examples of how correct snakebite management can lead to, in many cases, a full recovery. This will also be a full day with a discounted lunch kindly provided by TBBC.

The cost of the seminar is Ksh 3,000/= per day or Ksh 5,000/= for both days. Payment can be made on Friday at registration.
